Soon after the first Antonov AN-24s were imported from the Soviet Union in the 1960s, plans were hatched to manufacture the robust aircraft locally within China. The first AN-24 assembled in Xi'an by the factory of the same name rolled off the assembly line in 1970. Further development of the turboprop aircraft, now designated Y-7 and equipped with Chinese technology, proceeded rather slowly, and the first production model was not delivered until 1984. The Y-7's features and performance largely corresponded to the Soviet AN-24RV. Early examples initially went to the Air Force before the state-owned CAAC, which held the monopoly as the country's sole civilian airline until 1988, received numerous aircraft.
