"Moraea is a large genus, of the monocot family Iridaceae, native to Africa south of the Sahara, and concentrated in southern Africa, where it is widespread. Known in different parts of the subcontinent as tulps, or more specifically flappies, uintjies or uiltjies, or sometimes as wild irises, species of Moraea can be found in almost all parts of the several countries that comprise southern Africa. In many places they are small and inconspicuous, with tiny Iris-like flowers, but in the western Cape, Namaqualand and the Drakensberg and eastern Escarpment, species are sometimes common and have large conspicuous flowers so that they are among the loveliest, although perhaps least well-known of the beautiful wild flowers of the veld."
