- The Falklands War was a conflict between the United Kingdom and Argentina that broke out in 1982 over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, a British territory in the South Atlantic.
- Britain had effectively controlled the Falkland Islands since 1833, but in 1982 Argentina, which claimed the islands, sent naval vessels to South Georgia Island, east of the Falkland Islands, and marines disguised as civilians landed there. Then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher sent in army and navy forces to recapture the islands and secure British territory. The fighting ended with the surrender of Argentine forces on June 14.
