Historical Background
Developed by Rheinmetall, the Karl‑Gerät 040 was Germany’s 600 mm super‑heavy self‑propelled siege mortar of World War II, with a combat weight of 124 tons, purpose‑built to demolish heavily fortified defensive works. Seven vehicles were built in total, six seeing combat at Brest‑Litovsk, Sevastopol, Warsaw and other operations. It had a very low rate of fire, each shell weighing more than two tons, and poor cross‑country mobility; long‑distance movement required special railway transport. Most examples were captured and scrapped after WWII, only one complete survivor remains today.
