Founded in 1927, Pan American World Airways boasts a legacy of pioneering achievements, marked by unique flights, routes, and aircraft. On June 28, 1939, the airline launched its first commercial passenger flights across the Atlantic. The so-called Southern Route flew from New York City to Lisbon and Marseille, with stopovers in Bermuda, the Azores, and Marseille. On July 8, the Northern Route was inaugurated, flying from New York to London via Newfoundland, Canada, and Foynes, Ireland.
