The HY was founded in 1948. Post-war France needed utility vehicles to rebuild the country and revive the economy. It was created under the impetus of Pierre Boulanger who chose a specification that favoured practicality, robustness and the use of existing parts in the range. Indeed, its development began during the war in the greatest secrecy and without attracting the attention of the occupier. Its loading capacity of 1200 kg, and its ease of loading allowed it to last through the decades, it was produced until 1981
