From 1970, Interflug used Ilyushin IL-62 aircraft primarily on the prestigious route from (East-)Berlin to Moscow, but also on long-haul routes to Baghdad, Damascus and Cairo as well as to African destinations. With a total of 21 IL-62s, the GDR was the second largest customer of this type after the Soviet Aeroflot.
