The aircraft soon made its mark in several major airlift operations, as well as in the Afghan War. It was also used for develoing remote regions of the Soviet Union and relief operations. The Soviet answer to the C-5 Galaxy came in 1982 with the all-new An-124, named Ruslan after a Russian epic hero. With its 392-ton take-off weight and 120-ton playload, the An-124 overshadowed everything that had existed before. Originally a military freighter, it soon found itself a stable niche on the civil market due to its ability to haul outsize and ultra-heavy loads. The Antonov OKB astounded the world again in 1989 with the 600-ton An-255 Mriya designed to carry components of the Energiya/Buran space transport system piggy-back.

Red Star Series Volume 19 - The Lavochkin La-250, MiG I-3, I-7, I-175, Ye-150/151/152, Sukhoi T-37, P-37 and Tupolev Tu-28/128

by Yefim Gordon, Published by Midland Publishing. The mission was to intercept incoming adversaries at long range, which required plenty of engine power, ample fuel and heavy armament. Several Soviet design bureaus took on this priority task. The first heavy interceptor from the Mikoyan stable was the swept-wing I-3 of 1956 which, though never flown, was the precursor of the cannon-armed I-7U and the missile-armed I-75. These were followed by the delta-winged Ye-150 series of the late 1950s and early 1960s - the single-engined Ye-150 and Ye-152 and the twin-engined Ye-152A. Known to the outside world as the Ye-166, the huge Ye-152M set an impressive speed record of 2,681 km/h on 7th July 1962. These aircraft paved the way for the MiG-25 interceptor. Other contenders included the Sukhoi T-37, terminated by government order before it had a chance to fly. Even the Tupolev OKB, traditionally specializing in heavy bombers and airliners, developed the twin-engined Tu-128 - the world's largest

Red Star Series Volume 24

by Yefim Gordon and Vladimir Rigmant, Published by Midland Publishing. As soon as the Soviet government got wind of this program, it tasked the national aircraft industry with an even more ambitious project: the Soviet Union was to create an SST entirely on its own v and ahead of the West; this was a matter of national prestige. Predictably, Andrey N. Tupolev received the assignment to create the airliner that would place the Soviet Union in the lead. At the cost of a tremendous research and development effort, the target was met v designated Tu-144 (and dubbed, rather mockingly, Concordski by the West), the Soviet SST took to the air in December 1968 ahead of its Anglo- French counterpart. This book gives a detailed account of the Tu-144's design and explains the reasons of its premature withdrawal; it also describes the type's recent use in a new-generation SST technology research program held jointly with NASA. It is illustrated with numerous previously unreleased photos and line drawings.

Red Star Series Volume 24

by Yefim Gordon and Vladimir Rigmant, Published by Midland Publishing.
